Progressive Warns Consumers Against Scam
Updated on Oct. 8, 2009
Bogus letters tell consumers they've won $150,000; includes phony check for $4,500
MAYFIELD VILLAGE, Ohio — August 25, 2009 —
Progressive is urging consumers to protect themselves against a scam that could cost them thousands of dollars.
The company has gotten questions from consumers who have received phony letters in the mail about a "Prize Winning Payout" for a "Consumer Promotion Draw." Enclosed with the letters are counterfeit checks in the amount of $4,500 that are made to appear as if they were written from the account of Progressive County Mutual Insurance Company. The letter instructs the recipients to wire $3,750 to an address in the United Kingdom.
This is a scam. Progressive is not involved in any Consumer Promotion Draw sweepstakes and the $4,500 checks are counterfeit. Consumers who receive the mailing should not deposit the checks, but should instead report the matter to their local law enforcement agency and follow law enforcement instructions for what to do with the letter and counterfeit check. Ohioans who receive or have received what appears to be one of these checks should immediately contact the Ohio Department of Insurance Fraud Division at 1-800-686-1527 or www.insurance.ohio.gov or the Ohio Attorney General’s Office at (800) 282-0515 or www.ohioattorneygeneral.gov.
For more information on this scam, please see this Ohio Department of Insurance press release. For more on how to avoid being victimized by check scams, please see this information from the United States Postal Inspection Service.
Progressive is reporting the matter to the office of the Ohio Attorney General.
