Raising environmental awareness

Progressive is full of daily reminders to protect the environment.  We see recycling stations in visible areas, email footers encouraging the reader to print only if necessary, and recycled paper logos on everyone’s business cards.

And we dedicate an entire week each April to environmental awareness.

During Environmental Awareness Week, members of our Real Estate and Facilities group talk with employees and give them information about environmentally conscious habits and behaviors.

With online contests and exhibits in our large offices, we showcase our recycling and energy conservation efforts and offer information on how we’re reducing our footprint and making the world a greener, cleaner place.

Environmental Awareness Week also provides opportunities to donate eye glasses, cell phones, used household batteries, tennis shoes and more.  Eye glasses go to companies like Pearl Vision and EyeMasters, who refurbish them for donation to local charities. Batteries go to Clean Harbors, a national hazardous waste disposal company. We donate tennis shoes to Nike’s ReUse A Shoe, and give any regular shoes collected to Soles4Souls for impoverished people in many countries.

In 2011, we donated the cell phones to a local domestic abuse shelter through Verizon’s HopeLine program. In 2012, we gave them to the Cell Phones for Soldiers campaign.

This special week each year helps us remember that insuring a better future starts with each of us doing our part.

In 2011, we continued to make a positive difference through our environmental efforts as shown in this video for employees.
