Fueling Savings

How much could each of us save with a car that gets the equivalent of 100 miles per gallon?

We partnered with the X Prize Foundation to find out. The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE harnessed the creative energy and drive of inventors worldwide. The competition started in 2009 with more than 40 qualifying teams representing 18 U.S. states, 10 countries, and six fuel types. By collaborating across disciplines, inventors, students, and technophiles raced to develop the first production-ready, 100 Mile Per Gallon or energy equivalent (MPGe) vehicle.

In September 2010, after months of qualifying stages and rigorous testing, we announced three winners to share the $10 million prize purse. They are now eligible for a U.S. Department of Energy program that will help ready the vehicles for introduction to the U.S. market.

Then, who will be the true winners? All of us who benefit from greater fuel efficiency and a new generation of safe, viable, and super efficient vehicles.

We are proud to have been a part of this effort. We’re committed to helping the progressives among us who have big ideas for our shared future and the discipline to make them real.
