Report Scope and Boundary

We focus on driving social good in the course of doing business through transparency, efficiency, innovation, and empowerment. Pertinent information can be found at progressive.com and in our 2009 Annual Report, specifically related to our organizational profile, financial performance, work environment, policies, and corporate governance.

To determine what to include in our report, we use the Global Reporting Initiative G3 Guidelines, a set of internationally recognized sustainability reporting standards. The key criteria we report on are outlined in the GRI content index. Our U.S.-based agency and direct operations, primarily regarding employees and customers, are addressed, as well as anecdotal information for agent and supply chain operations.

Our Numbers

Emissions are calculated using the Greenhouse Gas Protocol calculation tools with guidance from “The Greenhouse Gas Protocol: A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (Revised Edition),” developed by the World Resource Institute and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.

Most data reported relates to environmental factors. As our environmental statement reflects, we work hard to manage our buildings, equipment, fleet, and resources to effectively meet business needs and minimize our effect on the environment. We continue to work on defining what needs to be measured, but started with emissions, as they have the most impact. As we continue to define our social responsibility efforts, we will identify and report upon other specific metrics.

Our senior management takes responsibility for the preparation and integrity of the information we report on for fiscal year 2009. Based on a comprehensive review by internal subject matter experts, we believe this information fairly represents our social responsibility activities and related financial performance for fiscal year 2009.
