As you know, spring is a great time to take care of those familiar household to-dos—like cleaning windows and checking smoke detectors. This not only helps promote safety, it can also help cut costs by making your home more efficient. Here’s a reminder of some of the things you should do around your home on a regular basis:
- Clean doors and windows, and repair or replace damaged panes and screens. Check seals, and reseal/caulk any leaks.
- Clean lint build-up from underneath your dryer and from the exhaust duct that’s connected to the back of your dryer.
- Clean or replace your furnace filter.
- Test GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets—which reduce electric shock—by following these instructions. If an outlet isn't working properly, contact a licensed electrician for service.
- Inspect all electrical outlets for fire hazards, like loose plugs and fraying wires.
- Vacuum and clean underneath the refrigerator.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and change the batteries.
- Make sure fire extinguishers are full or charged—indicators might be labeled differently—that the pressure is correct, and that you know how to use a fire extinguisher.
