Automotive X PRIZE: Competition Revs Up—Check Out Teams & Vehicles in the Running

Posted by Brittany Ritchey on 4/30/2010 at 9:30 AM

This fall, the world’s most promising super fuel-efficient vehicles will be revealed when the winners of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE are announced.

The last leg of the Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE starts this week at the Michigan International Speedway, and at Progressive, we’re all pretty excited because this means we’re getting closer to seeing vehicles that exceed 100 MPGe in the automotive market.

The teams who built the vehicles that start on-track performing testing this week come from all over the world, and they’ve put lots of time, money, and passion into developing super-efficient vehicles that people want to drive. They use a variety of gasoline alternatives to fuel their vehicles—everything from algae- and ethanol-based fuels, to rechargeable battery packs.

When you hear the teams talk about their vehicles firsthand, you really can’t help but to get caught up in the excitement.

One competitor, for instance, has watched his vehicle take shape after starting out as a simple sketch on a napkin. And the vehicles are amazing—one is so compact that instead of parallel parking it, you could park perpendicular to the street.
