Hear from the Automotive X PRIZE Winners

Posted by Brittany Ritchey on 9/16/2010 at 1:00 PM

The Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE, a competition to drive more choices in safe, affordable and super fuel-efficient vehicles, started with 111 teams and 136 vehicles. Today, we’re celebrating the three teams who won in their respective classes: Li-Ion Motors Corp, X-Tracer Team Switzerland, and Edison 2.

To hear from them and see their 100 MPGe vehicles, watch these videos:

Li-Ion Motors Corp || Wave II (Battery Electric)
Li-Ion, from Mooresville, N.C., talks about building a super-efficient car that’s got function, too, like air conditioning and space for a week’s worth of groceries.

X-Tracer Team Switzerland || E-Tracer 7009 (Battery Electric)
X-Tracer, from Winterthur, Switzerland, talks about designing a safe, sporty vehicle with enclosed tandem seating for two—a project they’ve been working on since 1982.

Edison 2 || Very Light Car #98 (Internal Combustion) Edison 2, from Lynchburg, Va., talks about building a car that is so light it can be pushed with one hand.

Are these vehicles something we can expect to see on the road in the near future?

@John Sullivan, Yes. Eight of the 12 finalist teams already have vehicles available for purchase in the U.S. and/or Europe.  Some of those vehicles are the actual competition entries, like Commuter Cars’ Tango, and others are vehicles manufactured by the finalist team, such as the Tata Nano.  Many of the remaining finalist teams expect to have their vehicle entries available for purchase in the U.S. in the next 12-18 months, including Alternative Class winner X-Tracer.
