General Snapshot® questions
What is Snapshot?
Typically, car insurance rates are based on a variety of factors related to your driving history or the histories of drivers who are similar to you. Snapshot prices your insurance differently and personalizes your insurance rate based on your actual driving (called usage-based insurance). The better you drive, the more you can save, and it's free to participate.
How can I enroll in Snapshot?
You can enroll in the Snapshot program online at the time you purchase your policy or by calling Progressive at 877-776-4266.
When is the rate change applied?
We'll apply any discounts you earned the next time your policy renews. If you're signing up now, that means in about six months.
Can I opt out of Snapshot?
You can opt out at any time. However, you may lose your participation discount and any chance to earn a discount based on your driving habits. Also, if you opt out more than 45 days after you sign up, you may get a surcharge when it's time to renew your policy.
What if a vehicle with Snapshot gets in an accident?
We won't use Snapshot data for claims purposes unless you say it's ok or we receive a court order like a subpoena. See the Snapshot Terms and Conditions for more information.
How might Snapshot affect my rate?
With Snapshot, we measure a variety of factors related to your driving, including the times of day you drive, sudden changes in speed (hard brakes and rapid accelerations) and the amount you drive.
Most Snapshot customers earn a discount based on their safe driving; however, riskier driving based on these factors indicate a greater likelihood of being in an accident and may result in a higher rate at renewal. See our state details page for more information.
Questions about the Snapshot mobile app only
Can I switch to a plug-in device?
Absolutely! The app may not work for everyone, so you can call 877-329-7283 to switch to a plug-in device at any time. And, if we notice any compatibility or other issues with your phone, we'll contact you with the option to switch to a device—you'll be able to keep your participation discount and continue earning your personalized rate.
Do I have to open Snapshot mobile every time I get in my car?
No. As long as you have your phone with you and the app installed, then you're all set. There's no need to open the app—it'll just run in the background and collect data as you drive, unless Pause Monitoring is enabled.
How does the app know if I'm driving?
The Snapshot mobile app tracks movement of a certain speed and distance to determine when you're driving.
What happens if my trip type is incorrect?
If Snapshot mobile incorrectly categorizes a trip, you can correct it in the app by tapping the trip type icon under My Trips.
I recently took a trip, but it didn't show up in Snapshot mobile. Is something wrong? Why don't all of my trips appear?
There are certain situations—things like low battery, sparse cell towers, etc.—that can cause incomplete or missing trips. However, it should be relatively infrequent—if you find that it's happening on the majority of your trips, please call us at 877-329-7283 for assistance.
Also, please keep in mind that while Snapshot mobile collects driving data on all of your trips—including those taken on public transportation, bikes, etc.—only trips where you're driving are used to calculate your rate.
Is all of the information shown in Snapshot mobile used to determine my rate?
No—we show quite a bit of information on the phone in order to make the experience more robust. For specifics on what information is used to determine your personalized rate, please visit the state details page.
Does the Snapshot mobile app limit my ability to use my phone while driving?
No. The mobile app doesn't impact your ability to use any of your phone's regular features while driving or otherwise.
How much data/battery will the app use?
The app uses very little data, and battery use is also pretty low when you're not driving. When the app is tracking a trip, it uses about as much battery as other driving navigation apps. If you take long car trips, we recommend charging the phone while driving.
However, if the phone battery power is very low, Snapshot mobile will limit data collection to conserve your battery.
What happens if I pause the app?
You can stop or "pause" Snapshot mobile for up to two weeks at a time. This feature might appeal to you if you're traveling out of the country. In addition to contacting your mobile carrier to discuss any international travel plans, we recommend pausing the app while you're away.
However, please keep in mind that if the app is paused frequently and we aren't collecting enough trip data, you'll need to switch to a plug-in device, which could extend your data collection period.
What happens if I delete the app?
For Snapshot to work properly, we need to hear from the app regularly, which can only happen if it's downloaded and registered on your phone.
If we don't hear from your app consistently, we'll send you an email with instructions on how to re-install the app or switch to a plug-in device.
What if I get a new phone number or a new phone?
No problem—as long as you've switched to an AndroidTM or iPhone®, we can transfer Snapshot mobile to your new device. If the app doesn't automatically transfer to your new phone, just go to your app store and re-download the Snapshot mobile app. From there, open the app and follow the instructions.
If you have any issues, please give us a call at 877-329-7283 so we can help.
How long should I leave the app on my phone?
Typically, we'll need to collect driving data over the course of your first policy term, which is usually about six months. We'll send you an email to confirm when you're finished. In rare cases when there are connection issues, we may need to extend your time with Snapshot, but we'll always let you know in advance.
Once you're finished with Snapshot, the app won't collect your trips and past data will no longer be available, so you can go ahead and delete it.
Will others on my policy have access to my driving data?
The primary named insured will be able to view limited driving data online for every Snapshot participant on the policy. There will be no location data in the online summary—just hard brakes, time of day and mileage.
Meanwhile, trip maps and location data are available on the phone that originally collected the data.
Does the Snapshot mobile app track phone calls?
Snapshot collects phone usage data (like phone calls, texting, apps, etc.) while you're driving, but the information isn't used to determine your rate. And don't worry—Snapshot doesn't have access to know who you're calling or messaging through your phone.
Can I try Snapshot again after I'm done?
Absolutely! You can always participate again, but we'll send you a plug-in device the next time you sign up.
I drive a company car, delivery truck, police car, etc. Will the Snapshot mobile app collect those trips?
Yes—if you regularly drive a vehicle that isn't on your policy, the Snapshot mobile app is not a good fit for you. The Snapshot plug-in device is your best option. You can plug it into your personal vehicle, and it will only track those trips.
Questions about the Snapshot plug-in device only
What is the 30-day trial?
If you're not quite ready to switch your insurance today, you can sign up for a trial of Snapshot. That way, you can see how much you could save before you get your Progressive policy. There's no obligation to buy at the end. Get more details.
When do I get my Snapshot device?
Whether you purchased a Progressive policy or signed up for our 30-day trial, you will receive your device in the mail within seven to 10 days.
Where do I plug in the device?
Plug it in to your car's diagnostic port; it's located under the driver's side dashboard of most cars. Every device comes with instructions and pictures to help you. See exactly where Snapshot plugs into your car.
How do I know the device is working?
After starting your car, simply look for a blinking light on the device. If you don't see one, unplug the device, review installation details and then plug it back in. If you still don't see a blinking light, please call us at 877-329-7283.
Why does my device beep when I drive?
Snapshot devices beep when you make a hard brake. Getting this instant feedback can help you improve your driving and maximize your potential savings.
What information does the device collect?
The Snapshot device collects information about how you drive, how much you drive and when you drive. It also collects your vehicle identification number and triggers an email to you if it comes unplugged. Some devices collect location data: this is only for research and development purposes—we don't use it to calculate your rate.
What happens if I am opted out of the program by Progressive?
If you do not plug in the device, it stops working or is disconnected from your car's diagnostic port (for a period of time and, after being alerted by us, you do not plug it in again), then Progressive may opt you out of the program.
If you never plug in the device, you will lose any first-term discount you may have earned just for signing up.
What if my device stops working?
If your device stops working or comes unplugged, you'll get an email alert, along with details on what to do next.
What if I lose the device?
Call us at 877-329-7283, so we can send you a new one. Unfortunately, the $50 charge for an unreturned device still applies.
Why can't I see some driving information anymore?
Snapshot reports are available for 180 days after you receive the email asking to return the device.
When do I return the device?
We'll send an email when it's time to unplug and return the device.
We usually try to time that email with your policy renewal. However, if you plug in the device in the middle of your policy period—rather than at the start—we may have you keep the device plugged in through your next policy period. We usually want devices plugged in for at least 75 days. Bottom line: just look for that email.
Note: These FAQs offer a broad overview of the Snapshot program and how it works. The program does vary in a few states. See the Snapshot Terms and Conditions for more information.
