2 boater-suggested coverages to welcome aboard

The ideas for Propulsion Plus® and Sign & Glide® On-Water Towing came to us from boaters. Here’s the story behind those coverages … and how they may help you have your best boating season yet!

It’s never been easier to let your voice be heard.

But if you’re like me, you may wonder just who, exactly, is reading all these comments. At Progressive, the answer is people like Rick Stern, our Boat Insurance manager.

“We review customer survey and social media feedback on a daily basis because our watercraft customers are passionate and smart, and have a ton of good ideas,” said Rick.

“Case in point: We introduced both Propulsion Plus coverage and Sign & Glide On-Water Towing coverage after hearing about the need from our customers.”

A new way to protect your propulsion system

Take Propulsion Plus. It sounds simple enough—we’ll repair or replace the lower unit of an outboard motor, or the upper and lower units of a stern-drive motor, in case of mechanical breakdown. You’re covered even if the mechanical breakdown is caused by wear and tear.

But no one was offering coverage like this until you told us about the need.

“In the past,” Rick explained, “we would only cover mechanical repairs if the damage was caused by a collision, like running into a submerged object. We’d see claims for outdrive damage and find out that it was due to a mechanical breakdown, not a collision. But that damage fell outside of what the policy covered.

“Quite understandably, the customer wasn’t happy, and we weren’t happy either. So we decided to do something about it. Now, with Propulsion Plus, you can get coverage for those kinds of mechanical breakdowns. And, you can get it for as little as $38 a year. With outdrive replacements costing $2,500 or more, this is a pretty good deal.”

A better way to get on-water help

While Propulsion Plus is a new coverage, Sign & Glide is a much-improved version of our On-Water Towing coverage. And, again, our customers can take the credit.

“Our old On-Water Towing coverage is what we call a ‘reimbursement coverage.’ That means, if you break down while on the water, you have to find a tow-boat operator, pay for the tow out of pocket, and then report all that to Progressive for reimbursement. Customers told us that wasn’t good enough. Of course, they were right.

“Today, we’re happy to offer a better version of On-Water Towing called ‘Sign & Glide.’ Now we’ll pay for towing, jump starts, fuel delivery, and soft un-groundings if your watercraft becomes disabled while on the water. One call to our dispatch center is all it takes; we’ll send a tow vessel to your watercraft, and we’ll pay the tow operator directly. You pay nothing out of pocket. And if you already have On-Water Towing coverage on your policy, we’ll automatically convert it to Sign & Glide—you won’t need to do anything.”

Even better, the coverage only costs about $30 a year (full disclosure: it’s a little higher in Florida at roughly $50 a year).
