3 ways to save on wedding travel

Turning Points 2 min read

According to a 2012 Brides magazine survey, about 15 percent of readers indicated that they were planning a destination wedding. It sounds fun, but when industry experts say that on average guest travel can be $1,500, it also sounds expensive.

While a destination wedding will almost certainly cost more to attend than a local one, there are ways to save some money on the three “As.”

1. Airfare: Book early

Reserve your plane ticket as soon as possible. While there are no guarantees in life, many travel experts seem to agree that you’re usually better off buying your ticket as far in advance as possible. Last minute reservations are likely to cost you. Check the usual sites (Expedia, Travelocity, etc.) to compare prices and buy your tickets.

2. Accommodations: Reserve your discount

Most couples will reserve a block of hotel rooms at or near the site of the wedding ceremony. Take advantage of those reduced rates. Sure, it can’t hurt to shop and compare, but these are likely to be the lowest rates you’ll find. Plus, you’ll be conveniently located at or near the site of the festivities.

3. Automobiles: Find a deal

After you land, you’ll want wheels. Sometimes the happy couple will arrange for a shuttle to your hotel, but if you have to rent a car, see if they worked out any deals with a rental car company.

Of course, it’s also perfectly acceptable to politely decline the invitation. The lucky couple does know that they’re asking a lot of their guests with destination weddings and there’s no shame in sending your regrets. But, if you’re going, take advantage of the tips shown above and save a couple bucks while you’re having a good time. And speaking of savings, be sure to check out Progressive Travel Insurance by InsureMyTrip. It could end up being the biggest cost-saver of all.
