A survey of travel insurance buyers released by travel insurance comparison site InsureMyTrip in June 2018 reveals that travelers in twenty-three states favor a trip to the United Kingdom. This survey data is based on to date 2018 purchases for a June, July or August departure date.
Destination popularity varies by state
Travel destinations within the UK are the clear favorite, with close to half of US states showing a preference for holidays within the UK to various locations including England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Other popular destinations appear to vary by region. Mexico is a top destination for Texas travelers and surrounding states including New Mexico, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Missouri.
In the Northeast, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut have a high number of travelers planning to visit Italy.
Comprehensive plans are the top choice of travelers
According to InsureMyTrip, over 70 percent of customers chose a comprehensive plan for their summer trip abroad. Comprehensive travel insurance plans offer the most benefits of all plan types.
Travelers can benefit from comprehensive coverage in a variety of circumstances that apply to most trips.
Benefits of comprehensive travel insurance generally include:
- Trip cancellation
- Trip interruption
- Baggage loss and delay
- Travel medical, and emergency medical evacuation
- 24-hour traveler assistance
- Accidental death benefits
These benefits are very common for comprehensive travel insurance plans, but they can vary per plan.
The cost of a plan varies based on factors like the age of travelers, number of travelers, and length of travel. Usually the cost is between 4-10% of the total trip cost.
For example, a couple in their 50s traveling to Scotland for a $5000 week-long tour could expect to see plans starting at around $200 for a comprehensive policy.
Comprehensive plans may offer optional coverage
Cancel for Any Reason coverage is a popular additional coverage for comprehensive plans, where available. If all eligibility requirements are met for purchase, most policies will reimburse 50 – 75% of insured prepaid, non-refundable trip costs.
Typically, a policy must be purchased within 10-21 days of making the initial trip payment to be eligible for CFAR benefits. Often, providers will require CFAR purchasers to insure the entire prepaid, non-refundable trip costs in order to receive the coverage. Cancellation of the trip must be no less than two days prior to the scheduled departure date for CFAR benefits to be available.
