The Snapshot Mobile App: FAQ

  • What is the Snapshot Mobile app?
  • It's a new mobile application that Progressive is launching. Right now, we're rolling it out to select, existing Progressive customers. If you choose to participate, we hope you can provide us with feedback to help make the Snapshot Mobile app even better. The app is purely for research purposes and doesn't enroll you into Snapshot. If you're an existing Snapshot customer with a plug-in device, the app won't affect your personalized Snapshot rate.

The Snapshot Mobile app works pretty much the same way as the actual Snapshot device (that you plug into your car). It uses info from your phone sensors (such as GPS) to determine when and how you're driving. After your driving trips are completed, you can view your driving results within the app. It runs in the background, so you don't need to worry about letting us know when you're going to drive. Just drive like you normally do.

  • Can I unplug my Snapshot device?
  • No. If you're an existing Snapshot customer, you'll need to keep your Snapshot device plugged in to continue participating in the Snapshot program. The Snapshot Mobile app is purely for research purposes and doesn't affect the driving information (and personalized rate) from your Snapshot device.

  • How do I get started?
  • Just download the app called "Snapshot Mobile" and enter the invitation code we emailed you. Register with some basic information, and the app will start collecting driving data. You only need to use the app for 90 days. After that, we're no longer collecting information, so you can delete the app. We'll also email you an exit survey.

Participation in Snapshot Mobile is optional.

  • How do I know the Snapshot Mobile app is compatible with my phone?
  • The Snapshot Mobile app is available for iOS and Android. Please see the list below for specific requirements.

    iOS

    • Requires iOS 8 or newer
    • Compatible with iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5S, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus

    Android

    • Requires Android 4.1 or newer
    • Compatible with all Android phones meeting the minimal OS version, which also contain cellular, Wi-Fi, and GPS chips
    • Not compatible with the Android Developer Pre-release
  • What settings are required to use the Snapshot Mobile app on my phone?
  • iOS/iPhones

The following settings and permissions are required for your app to function properly:

    1. Background App Refresh: This enables the app to record driving data while it's running in the background on your phone. For best results, this setting must be enabled for the Snapshot Mobile app at all times. This setting can be found in the Settings app under General > Background App Refresh.
    2. Location Services: This is used to calculate driving behaviors such as mileage. For the app to work properly, Location Services must be enabled at all times. This setting can be found in the Settings app under Privacy > Location Services.
    3. App Running: In order for the app to properly record safe driving, please do not delete or close the app. It's okay for the app to be running in the background.
    4. Motion Activity: This enables the app to identify when you are driving as opposed to performing other activities like walking and running.

    Android

The app should work on most Android phones without any special configuration. Upon installation, the app will request access to the following:

    1. Location: Location services are used to calculate driving behaviors such as hard braking and mileage. On newer versions of Android, in Settings > Location > Mode needs to be set to "High Accuracy" or the app can't use GPS (just cellular). On older Android versions, Settings > Location needs to have all Location Service source options enabled. Examples include: GPS Satellites, <Carrier> Location Services and Google Location Services (or Google WiFi Location Information).
    2. Modify or delete the contents of your SD card: Google Maps, used for displaying your trips in the app, requires this setting to cache map data. We don't modify or delete any of your existing SD card content.
    3. Read phone status and identity: This is required to detect distraction-free driving.
    4. App Running: In order for the app to properly record safe driving, please do not delete or close the app. It is okay for the app to be running in the background.
    5. Motion Activity: This enables the app to identify when you are driving as opposed to performing other activities like walking and running.
  • How will the Snapshot Mobile app affect the battery life of my phone?
  • The Snapshot Mobile app is designed to minimize the impact on your phone's battery. For most mobile phones, battery usage is negligible when not collecting driving data. When driving, battery consumption is comparable to other driving and navigation apps. When the battery is low, the app will not collect as many driving details. You'll see a battery icon next to any trips that were not fully captured because of low battery. Care should be taken to charge the battery while driving if you take longer car trips.

  • Why don't all my trips appear?
  • The Snapshot Mobile app is designed to capture and record most of your trips. But, there are some cases when a trip may not be captured. For example, to save your battery life, trips aren't captured if your phone's battery level is low.

  • How much data does the Snapshot Mobile app use?
  • For most data plans, the impact should be minimal. The average data usage is expected to be about 35 megabytes per month. In rare cases, it might be as high as 70 megabytes per month. Data is not transmitted while you're driving and is sent over WiFi when available. You are solely responsible for any mobile data expenses you incur while using the app.

  • Do my results in the Snapshot Mobile app impact my Snapshot program results?
  • No. Use of the Snapshot Mobile app is purely for research purposes. If you're currently enrolled in Snapshot and have a plug-in device, the app does not affect your Snapshot personalized rate. If you're not a Snapshot customer, participation in the pilot doesn't automatically enroll you into Snapshot.
