Highway History, One Yard Sale at a Time

Posted by Jon Beals on 7/31/2008 at 1:00 PM

By Danny Palmerlee

In the age of strip malls and mass production, when a toaster is a toaster and one brand looks like the next, yard sales are a breath of fresh air. For most people, they're local events, a fun way to kill a few weekend hours picking through broken kitchen items and dusty books in search of treasure. But for many towns, the summer yard sale has gained a greater significance: tourism.

East to West: Across America's Underbelly

Posted by Jon Beals on 7/10/2008 at 1:00 PM

By Aaron Anderson

Entire books have been written about the Great American road trip and there is no question that traveling cross-country by car is the best way to see the United States. Find America's soul crossing the crispy-fried South or enchanted West on scenic byways; embrace her cultural mysteries at a Midwestern rodeo or the Flora-Bama (that's Florida and Alabama for those of you not in the know) mullet-tossing festival; discover her inner beauty and personality in off-the-map state parks and wilderness areas, in beaten-up towns and glittering cities.

Coast to Coast on U.S. Route 2

Posted by Jon Beals on 7/3/2008 at 1:00 PM

By Catherine Bodry

Trailing through rugged alpine slopes in the West, small towns in the Midwest, and climbing to the highest reaches of Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, U.S. Route 2 (often called Highway 2) inspires a cross-country road trip off the buzzing interstates. Flying just under the cover of the Canadian border, Route 2 spans 2,579 miles between the East and West Coasts. As its low-numbered designation indicates, it's the northernmost east-west route in the United States. You can break up your trip by state or region, or ramble across the entire country — here are some of the sights you'll see along the way.
