What is an RV VIN?
An RV VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique series of letters and numbers that tell you about what type of RV it is, the make, year, and more. All RVs have a VIN, and it’s required to register and insure your RV.

Where do you find your RV VIN?
Your VIN is located in a different place depending on the type of RV you have. You'll find most RV VINs in a similar place as a car VIN – on the driver's side door or dashboard. For non-driving RVs, you'll likely find the VIN on the left, front side of the trailer, or on the main door of the travel trailer. Travels with Ted breaks down where you might find the VIN based on the type of RV you have:
| RV TYPE | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENT |
|---|---|
| Class A Motorhome | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENTDriver's side dashboard |
| Class B and C Motorhome | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENTDriver's side dashboard or inside door frame |
| Travel Trailer | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENTOn the frame near the front hitch |
| Fifth-Wheel Camper | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENTNear the front-left side of the RV |
| Pop-Up Camper | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENTOn the frame near the hitch or side frame rails |
| Toy Hauler | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENTOn the frame near the front hitch |
| Teardrop and Other Small Camper | TYPICAL VIN PLACEMENTOn the frame near the front hitch |
If the RV's VIN is not immediately available based on this chart, a few other places Travels with Ted suggest are:
- Inside cabinet doors or storage compartments
- On the frame under propane tanks
- Along support bars near the front or rear end of the trailer
- On the exterior door's frame
- Inside the engine compartment
- Under the kitchen sink
Pro tip:
Keep in mind that the easiest place to find your RV's VIN may be on the title or registration.
What does your RV VIN mean?
RV VINs are unique to each vehicle, meaning no two RV VINs are the same. And like those used on cars, RV VINs are 17-digit numbers that can tell you a lot about your vehicle and it's manufacture history. According to Keystone RV, here's how to decode what each character means in your RV VIN:
| 1-3 | 4 | 5-7 | 8 | 9 | 10 | 11 | 12-17 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing Company | 4Type of RV | 5-7Model Identifier | 8Axle Count | 9Check Digit | 10Year of manufacture | 11Which factory produced the vehicle | 12-17The RV's serial number |
Pro tip:
If you get an error when entering your RV VIN online, check the ninth digit carefully – oftentimes it's a number calculated to ensure the validity of the vehicle's VIN and cannot be decoded using the chart above. If the number is correct and you're still getting an error code, give us a call and we can help.
RV VIN lookup
The US Department of Transportation and its National Highway Safety Administration have a VIN lookup feature which easily gives you information about your RV's VIN.
