Weather

Progressive's boat and motorcycle insurance customers in your area enjoy low rates due to shorter boating and riding seasons.

Because the average home prices in Ohio are reasonable, so are home insurance rates.

Ohio motor vehicle insurance requirements

Auto

Required

Driving without insurance could result in a fine, license suspension or even jail time. Like almost all states, Ohio requires bodily injury and property damage liability coverage. If you're in an accident and you injure someone or damage their property, liability will cover you up to certain limits, including lawsuits/court costs.

State-minimum amount: You'll usually see three separate numbers, and these are your "limits." Limits are how much we'll pay out in an accident. In Ohio, you must have these limits or higher.

  • $25,000 bodily injury per person (limit for injuries to one person)
  • $50,000 bodily injury per accident (limit for all injuries in an accident)
  • $25,000 for property damage (limit for damage to someone else's car or property)

We offer many more optional coverages. See all other car insurance coverages.

Motorcycle

Required

If you ride without insurance, you could lose your license, get a fine or even go to jail. The minimum limits in Ohio are the same as auto insurance.

Boat

Not required, unless you finance your boat

Ohio doesn't require boat insurance but, if you finance your watercraft, your lender will likely require comprehensive and collision coverage. Keep in mind, some marinas may mandate proof of liability insurance.

RV/travel trailer insurance

Required if you drive it, not required if you pull it

RV insurance is optional if you're simply pulling a travel trailer, toy hauler, etc. If you're driving a motorhome, you're legally required to have liability coverage—just like with auto insurance. You may be required by your financer to carry comprehensive and collision coverage if you're financing your RV. The minimum limits in Ohio are the same as auto insurance.

Homeowners and condo

Required if you're financing your home

If you have a mortgage, your lender will require insurance to protect their investment. If you have no mortgage or lien on your home, you don't need insurance due to any state law. But, since your home is often your most valuable asset, it makes sense to keep it continually insured.

Renters

Some landlords require insurance

Ohio law doesn't mandate renters insurance. But, many landlords or apartment complexes will require it before they'll rent to you.
