At Progressive, we're committed to protecting your privacy and earning your trust. We understand that you value your privacy, and that you may have concerns about how we use the data collected through the Safe Travels mobile application ("App") pilot. That's why in addition to our commitment to you in our Privacy Policy, available at https://www.progressive.com/privacy/, we want to clearly explain how the App works, describe the data we receive, and how we will use the data.
Data Provided
The App records driving information, mobile phone information, and App analytics information. App data is encrypted when transmitted from the App to us.
Driving information includes vehicle speed and location using GPS, time information, and sensor data from the phone’s magnetometer, gyroscope, and accelerometer. Other information, such as trip duration, and rates of acceleration and braking, is derived from the speed, location, and time information. Because the App is not connected to your vehicle in any way, it will collect the driving information of any vehicle you occupy, even as a passenger.
Mobile phone information includes Wi-Fi status, whether your screen is locked, whether you are calling or otherwise using your phone, whether your call is hands-free, motion activity or activity recognition, whether the phone is connected to a Bluetooth® device, referring/exit pages, date/time stamp, and operating system data available to the App. The App does not record the content of your communications or the identity of the person with whom you are communicating.
App analytics information includes how often you use the App, aggregated usage, performance data, and other App activity.
How We Use the Data
The Safe Travels pilot focuses on how safely, how much, and when you drive. Personally identifiable App data is treated as Application Information under our Privacy Policy. We use the data we receive to provide you with a safety score based on your driving behavior, along with results and suggestions. We also use the data for research and development.
Driving information and mobile phone information collected by the App will be retained on your mobile phone for several days and will then be deleted, but your safety score will be available in the App for a limited time. App analytics information is used to help us understand how you interact with the App, so that we can continue to improve the experience.
We limit access to the data we receive and use physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to help protect it and your privacy. We will retain this data indefinitely.
How We Won't Use the Data
- We will not sell personally identifiable App data to any third parties.
- We will not use App data to resolve an insurance claim you have with us without first obtaining permission from you or the vehicle owner.
- We will not use App data we receive during this pilot to set or change the rate on your insurance policy.
When We May Disclose the Data to Others
We will not share personally identifiable App data with any third parties, unless it's necessary or appropriate to detect or prevent fraud, perform research, or comply with the law. For example, such data may be disclosed:
- When we're legally required to provide the data, such as in response to a subpoena in a civil lawsuit or by police when investigating the cause of an accident.
- To service providers who are contractually required to maintain its confidentiality.
- As otherwise required by law.
We may share de-personalized App data more broadly. De-personalizing the data means that we will remove your personally identifiable information so that the data cannot be uniquely associated with you.
It's Completely Voluntary
We hope this helps you better understand Safe Travels. Remember, using the App and participating in the Safe Travels mobile application pilot is completely voluntary.
