Classic car insurance rates are on average 39% less than standard auto rates*

Your classic isn't just a car. That's why your classic car insurance policy isn't just a standard car insurance policy. Instead, it's a much different policy that's built just for your classic and includes more specialized coverages. And your classic or collector car insurance policy actually costs about $276 less* than a standard auto policy.

What makes a car a classic?

The exact definition may vary among classic car insurance companies, but Hagerty defines them as "fun-to-drive" vehicles that maintain or appreciate in value and are used primarily for pleasure. A few examples:

  • 1967 Ford Mustang
  • 1975 Volkswagen Beetle
  • 1980 Chevrolet Corvette

If your car is not a classic, you can still be insured. But, you'll need a standard auto policy with Progressive instead. Get an auto insurance quote online.

How does classic or collector car insurance differ from regular auto insurance?

One of the key differences between classic and regular car insurance is that a regular policy may cover you only for the actual cash value of your classic car. Learn more about the difference between classic and regular auto policies with our Classic Car Insurance 101 guide.

What are the requirements for classic car insurance?

Generally, to get insurance for classic, collector, vintage, and antique cars or trucks, you need to park your vehicle in a garage, use it as an extra car—not your daily vehicle—and keep it in good working condition. Here’s a quick rundown of some requirements to qualify for Hagerty's classic car insurance:

  • Only for occasional use: You can take your car out for pleasure driving and use it for exhibitions, tours, etc., but it can’t be your daily driver.
  • Must have adequate storage: Enclosed structures are preferred, such as a private garage or storage unit, but carports, driveways, and other storage areas may also qualify.
  • No serious driving infractions: In many states, you may not qualify for classic auto insurance if you’ve had excessive speeding violations, reckless driving, and other serious infractions in the last three years.
  • Must have an insured daily driver: All household members with a driver’s license need a regular-use vehicle, and you must also maintain a regular insurance policy for your primary car.
