We're here to help

Below are some common questions about MyRate. If you can't find your answer, send us an e-mail and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

    • You rarely drive after midnight.

  • MyRate is available to auto insurance customers in the following states:

  • There are certain costs associated with MyRate, depending on your state. For example, in some states, you'll pay a $30 technology expense per policy term. This expense covers the cost of our technologically advanced MyRate device, as well as the cost to wirelessly transmit your data. Any discount you earn based on your driving data could offset this expense.

Depending on your driving habits and your state, you also may pay a surcharge that could result in a higher price for auto insurance. Discounts and surcharges do not apply to all coverages in all states. See what MyRate discounts and surcharges are available in your state.

  • When you choose MyRate, what you pay for insurance is based on when, how much and how you drive. For instance, if you frequently drive after midnight, or you drive aggressively, the price you pay for auto insurance could be affected when your policy renews.

Driving risk by time of day:
  • You'll receive a MyRate device in the mail about a week later. Just plug it into your car and drive as you normally would. To see your driving information and your projected renewal rate, log on to your policy at Progressive.com.

  • We will not share MyRate data with any third parties unless it's necessary or appropriate to service your insurance policy, prevent fraud, perform research, or comply with the law. If you have a claim with Progressive, we will not use MyRate data to resolve the claim without first obtaining permission from you and, if not you, the registered vehicle owner.

  • Enrollment in the MyRate Program is voluntary and may be terminated by you at any time. Please note that any MyRate data collected will not continue to be used to determine your insurance rate after leaving the program.* If you do opt out, be sure to return the device to us.

    * AL customers - please note that after terminating participation in the program, up to 12 months of MyRate data may be used for renewal pricing purposes.

  • Depending on your state, it's possible your rate could increase based on your driving habits.

For example, in some states, it's possible the $30 technology expense will be higher than your MyRate driving discount after your first term. If so, your rate could increase. Remember that you can track your renewal rate online to see if this is the case. If it is, you can either change your driving habits to increase your discount, or you can terminate your enrollment at any time. If you do this, the technology expense will be removed from your policy at the start of your next term.

In other states, you may see an increase in your rate — up to 9 percent — based on your driving habits. If you don't think that you can change your driving to receive a lower rate, you have the option to cancel the program at any time.

  • Your MyRate discount is based on your driving habits, so please refer to your detailed reports to see what behaviors affect your discount. To calculate your discount, we consider driving information, including number of miles driven, time of day miles are driven, and sudden stops and starts. To help increase your discount, you can reduce:

    • The total number of miles you drive
    • The number of miles you drive during high-risk hours
    • Sudden starts and stops.

  • After we've been able to collect 30 days of your driving information, you can log in to your policy at Progressive.com to see your projected MyRate discount.

  • Your renewal rate will be based on how much you drive, how aggressively you drive and when you drive. To help increase your discount, you can avoid the following:

    • Excessive mileage
    • Excessive acceleration
    • Hard braking
    • Driving during peak hours
    • Driving after midnight.

  • The MyRate device records the following:

    • Vehicle speed and time of day
    • When the device is connected and disconnected from the vehicle
    • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) upon installation

Other information, such as miles driven and rates of acceleration and braking, is derived from the speed and time information recorded by the device. The MyRate device does not collect information about where you drive. Instead, it focuses on how safely, how often, how far, and when you drive. Please note that the MyRate device does not contain GPS technology and does not track vehicle location or whether you're exceeding the speed limit, nor do we know who is driving the car in which the device is installed.

  • No. The MyRate device only collects data related to when, how much and how you drive. The device does not collect any data related to where you drive.

  • Once you log in to your policy, you can:

    • Review specific trips.
    • Get an overview of your driving habits.
    • Track your driving by day of the week or time of day.
    • Compare your driving to other MyRate participants.
    • View easy-to-read charts and graphs showing your driving behavior.

  • All you have to do is plug the small device into your vehicle's diagnostic port (usually located beneath the steering column), and drive as you normally would. The MyRate device will wirelessly share your driving information with us so we can start calculating your renewal discount. You can view your data by logging in to your policy at Progressive.com.

  • You can request a MyRate device for every vehicle on your policy that was manufactured in 1996 or later. Some 1996 or newer model cars may not qualify, but we'll let you know immediately if they don't.

  • Vehicles older than 1996 do not have the diagnostic port that's required for use with our device.

  • MyRate devices should arrive in the mail seven to 10 days after you sign up for the program. If you haven't received your device after 10 days, please contact us and provide your current mailing address.

  • If the MyRate device is connected to your vehicle but doesn't blink when you start your vehicle, please contact us.

A green light will flash when the MyRate device has power, which also indicates it's installed correctly. This light will flash about once every three seconds if you're in an area with good cell phone coverage. Additionally, an orange light will blink once a second when your engine is on. Keep in mind that the lights may be difficult to see depending on where you plug in the MyRate device or how sunny it is outside.

  • To meet our legal obligations to state departments of insurance, we keep information collected or derived from the MyRate device for the time we determine is required by law. After this time, we will remove personally identifiable information so that the data cannot be associated with a particular driver or policyholder and keep it indefinitely.
