Powerboats, also known as motorboats, can encompass anything from a runabout to a yacht. They’re used for everything from water sports to fishing, but the common characteristic is a capable propulsion system. With speed comes a higher risk of accidents, so you’ll want to make sure you and your speedboat are properly insured before you hit the water.
Quote powerboat insurance online, and you can get immediate coverage. Here are some of the common powerboats we insure:
- Bass and fishing boats
- Bay boats
- Center consoles
- Cuddy cabins
- Deck boats
- House boats
- Jet boats
- Ski/wake boats
Do you need insurance for a powerboat?
Only a few states require boat insurance. However, with top speeds of up to 75mph for some motorboats, it’s advisable to carry boat insurance in case of an accident. Not only is it wise to insure your powerboat against physical damage, but you’ll also want to consider liability coverage in the event you’re responsible for someone else’s injuries or damages while boating.
What you should know when insuring your powerboat
- The hull identification number is necessary to start a boat insurance policy; if you don’t have the hull ID number handy, you can still get a quote if you know your powerboat’s year, make, and model
- If your boat manufacturer isn’t listed when you start your quote, we’ll ask about your powerboat’s hull length, hull material (usually fiberglass or aluminum), and propulsion type (inboard, outboard, or inboard/outboard)
- Completing a boater safety course could lower your insurance rate
- You’ll have the option to insure your powerboat’s trailer
How much is motorboat insurance?
At Progressive, a boat insurance policy starts at $100/year.* Many factors will go into determining your exact rate, including your type of powerboat, boating history, and location.
We offer a variety of boat insurance discounts to help bring down your price, including one for being the original owner of your powerboat.
Popular powerboat coverages our boaters love
Sign & Glide® on-water towing
Add Sign & Glide® coverage and you’ll never be stranded on the open water. We’ll pay for on-water towing, jump starts, soft un-groundings, and fuel delivery if your boat is disabled on the water. Simply call our dispatch center or download and use the app. We’ll arrange for and pay the tow operator directly. You pay nothing out of pocket except for the cost of the delivered fuel.
Propulsion Plus® mechanical breakdown coverage
Progressive will pay to repair or replace the lower unit of an outboard motor, or upper & lower units of an inboard/outboard motor if you have a mechanical breakdown. Propulsion Plus is an optional coverage, starting at just $38/year. Compare that to the thousands you could pay out of pocket to fix your drive system.
Water sports coverage
Covered at no extra cost on every Progressive watercraft policy, we’ll pay for any injuries or damages to property for which the boat owner is liable. Tubing, knee boarding, wake boarding, wake surfing, and waterskiing are typically covered. Note that parasailing, kite boarding, or other activities in which someone is pulled through the air are not covered.
Replacement cost personal effects
You can add up to $5,000 in coverage for stolen, damaged or lost items that aren’t boating-related, like cell phones, tablets, clothes, sunglasses, and cameras. We also offer a separate fishing equipment coverage to cover fishing rods, tackle, tackle boxes, and more.
